The Weather’s Always Great in Anguilla!

By Travelong | Our Blog

The Weather’s Always Great in Anguilla! Let your mind wander to the Caribbean… sparkling aqua water, palm trees, relaxation… ahhhh… There’s no better escape from the winter blues! But which of the many beautiful islands should you visit? Our travel consultant Sissy Bolcar shares why Anguilla tops our list. She recently planned a trip for two families to visit the island for a holiday gathering of great friends and celebration of a 50th birthday. The families, teenagers included, were in need of an escape from the hectic metro NYC lifestyle. A stay at the Viceroy of Anguilla was the solution! A little background from Marylyn: I first visited Anguilla when I was expecting my first child in 1990. My husband and I stayed at the economical, now-defunct Mariners on Sandy Ground. We returned to Anguilla three more times over the next 15 years, as time allowed. We enjoyed stays at the Malliouhana and Cap Juluca hotels on subsequent trips. I’ve not been back for a few years, but have sent some clients, and my resort of choice today is the Viceroy. Why Anguilla? Part of the British West Indies, the island of Anguilla has retained its ease and sense of community. Although the landscape has changed in the last 25 years, the fabric of the citizens has not. You are quickly welcomed and set at ease by the warm and relaxed reception of your hosts. Anguilla is one of the few islands that allows you to rent a car and just get lost, exploring over 33 beaches in just a 16 mile island. It is not lush with forests and mountains, but the beaches are simply beautiful. They’ll compel you to sit for a while and maybe even take a nap! You come to Anguilla to relax, swim, sun, and enjoy the people around you. Visitors love the infamous Rum Punch cocktail, and eating grilled lobster and crayfish. Anguilla does not take itself too seriously, even amidst the continued development of upscale resorts and a new designer golf course. Anguilla still prides itself on it’s “Goat Crossing” signs, and its beach fish fry. Note – Anguilla is not the best island for golfing nor is it a place to hobnob with the rich and famous (although they do vacation there). Why the Viceroy? The Viceroy, a 5-star property that has earned its perch at the top of the Caribbean “A” list, keeps careful to blend itself into the feel of the island. The property sits on a peninsula between two beautiful beaches, Meads Bay and Barnes Bay. The design of the hotel is chic, yet natural. The common areas are open and combine the island’s colonial wood with organic fabrics. The feel is laid-back luxury, just like the island itself! Various dining options include the upscale Coba (where my clients enjoyed a holiday dinner), casual pool and beach-side grills, and the fabulous Sunset Lounge. My clients loved viewing the sunsets while sipping a cocktail and dancing to the DJ! They also took advantage of the in villa dining prepared and served by the Viceroy’s acclaimed kitchen. What is there to do at the Viceroy? Our travelers relaxed at the private pool at their villa, the main resort pool, and the beach! Paddleboarding, snorkeling, and swimming were the main activities. They even hit the fitness center and took a yoga class. The plan was to decompress, and that they did! More Anguilla Destinations Elsewhere on the island… We recommend dining at Anguilla’s classic restaurants Blanchards and The Barrel Stay, for a fun time and delicious treats. The Dune Preserve at beautiful Rendezvous Bay is an island institution and a must visit. Bankie Banx has assembled top up & coming island musicians to perform nightly at this rustic sprawling beach shack. It’s a priceless experience, especially if you get to hear Bankie perform! Our travelers also visited Scilly Cay, and as instructed, went to Island Harbour and waved for a boat. They spent an afternoon eating the amazing island BBQ, listening to reggae, and enjoying rum punches. Scilly Cay is pricey for lunch, but the grilled lobster is one of my most memorable meals, and the vibe is priceless. What Our Travelers Said “Hi Marylyn, Thank you so much for organizing my 50th birthday trip. Everything was AMAZING! We loved the Viceroy, the dinners you organized were yummy and the travel to and from was seamless! As you can imagine, we lit up the Viceroy a bit with our crew. We were the talk of the island with our Thursday night dance party in the Sunset Lounge with DJ Sugar. When we arrived at the ferry on Sunday we were told everyone heard about the party with people dancing on tables. Again, thank you so much. I had a smile on my face all week! We look forward to returning. ~ JoAnn and Jeff trio Final thoughts from Marylyn: When you get this type of feedback, it makes you realize the magic of trip design. The recipe? Listen to the client, select a fitting and extraordinary place (such as Anguilla), and match the property to their personality. It seems to have worked. I am currently planning my return to Anguilla as we speak. I will report back upon my return!

Why the Berkshires Belong on Your Fall Getaway List!

By Travelong | Our Blog

Why the Berkshires Belong on Your Fall Getaway List! Every year, humans migrate to New England for leaf-peeping and old-fashioned fall fun! While Vermont and New Hampshire are widely known for their beauty, remember that western Massachusetts has a gem of its own – the Berskshire Mountains. Quaint towns like Lenox, Lee, Great Barrington, Pittsfield, and Stockbridge boast wonderful inns, dining (The Red Lion Inn is a treat), shopping, museums, gardens, wineries, and plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors for all activity levels! Just over the border of Connecticut and away from the traffic of I-95, this area never disappoints! To whet your appetite for staying at a historic mansion, one of our seasoned travelers shares this recap of her time the Blantyre Hotel: “My stay at Blantyre was perfect! The property is simply exquisite and the staff is professional, top notch, and quite warm and welcoming. There’s not one thing I would change about Blantyre! From the beautiful grounds, to the lovely interiors, the detailed touches and the attentive and charming staff……I can’t wait to return. I would recommend Blantyre to any couple who is looking to get away for a weekend of complete decompression. They will not only find relaxation, but they will feel as if they have stepped into a time that was classic and genteel! The grounds of Blantyre are pristine, with rolling lawns leading up to the venerable mansion that houses the main components of the property. The Cottages and the Carriage House sections also offer beautiful rooms, decorated in tapestry and furnishings of a bygone era. What caught my eye was the attention to detail at every corner! The rooms have wonderful coffee table books that you are actually drawn to read! The DVD selections are carefully chosen and embody the classic sense of the place. I watched “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” one evening. A delicious full breakfast (included) is served on china and features goodies from local orchards, bakeries, and farms. One afternoon, we sat in the stately main living room, enjoying the array of fresh fruit, teas and homemade lemonade. As we lounged, we were served by a polished “bartender” who pushed the beautiful antique barcart right up to us! We had the most memorable drink served in an antique highball glass. We felt like queens for the day! The Berkshires surrounds Blantyre. Lenox center is a mile away. Stockbridge and Great Barrington are 10 minutes away. There is so much to do that you will have to go a few times to enjoy it all. The arts are in abundance. There are hiking trails, biking trails, fishing and kayaking, all within a 30 minute drive. The staff at Blantyre will help you map out a day outdoors, or they will secure you tickets to a theater performance of your choice. You are treated as if you were a guest of the Astors!” Do yourself a favor by getting out of the rat race and escaping to the Berkshires for a few days of bliss!

Cities, Nature & Fun: An All-American Vacation Has it All! In honor of Memorial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day, we think of the many wonderful historical, patriotic, and unique places to visit right here in the United States! For an all-American vacation that combines using brain cells, burning calories, relaxing, and experiencing one-of-a-kind places, the following destinations make a great weekend getaway or full-fledged vacation that’s brimming with great stories! CITIES: Our cities offer remarkable architecture, with the stories of how our country evolved, and of course wonderful hotels in which to unwind at the end of each exhilarating day! With this type of vacation, even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, you’ll have plenty of great memories. Some of our favorite places include: Washington: Smithsonian museums with something for every age and interest; Arlington National Cemetery for a poignant and humbling experience; The Capitol and White House for a glimpse of government proceedings. Philadelphia: visit Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell to soak in the colonial times, play and learn at the Franklin Institute, and run like Rocky up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art then go inside it and explore! Much more here. Boston: take a walking tour along the Freedom Trail including a stop at Faneuil Hall, enjoy a baseball game at Fenway, or saunter around the Public Garden and taking a swan boat ride (a must do!). NATURE: Then there are the U.S. National Parks, each one with its own majestic beauty unlike any other place on earth! Thankfully, there are options for all levels of physical fitness so people of all ages and abilities can experience these marvels of nature. Five parks in Utah must been seen to be believed! Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Zion National Park give visitors the chance to see beauty up, down, and all around! And you can stay at a lodge right in the middle of the parks! The biggies: Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Canyon, and Yosemite National Park out west, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park east of the Mississippi, and many more. These parks never disappoint due to their sheer size and variety of topography. PLAYTIME: And, there are built for fun places such as Florida, California, and New Orleans! New Orleans holds a special place in the hearts of all who visit! It’s got great architecture, culture, events, music, food, and people! In the Orlando, FL, area, theme parks offer pure escapist fun for kids of all ages. Planning and following expert advice helps travelers get the most out of their time and money. Walt Disney World has four diverse theme parks plus plenty of other activities, while Universal Orlando offers visitors a walk through Harry Potter’s world along with thrill rides. California offers everything from beach to mountain to city vacationing! Starting in the San Francisco area including wine country, travelers then drive down the coast, stopping to see Hearst Castle, Solvang, Hollywood, and ending with a relaxing few days in beautiful San Diego. These are just a handful of our “bucket list” destinations in the U.S., along with many more off-the-beaten-track and well-known sites.
