Mel Vigman on AMA

By Travelong | Our Blog

Overall terrific trip along the Danube after three days in Prague. The AMA Sonata is new, sleek and comfortable; the crew were very polite, very efficient. Rooms were small but quite well planned and water pressure in showers always good. The tours were informative in positively beautiful sites, with equally beautiful cathedrals. Some tours were in very crowded popular spots e.g. Schonbrunn Palace. I preferred the less crowded ones. Tour guides ranged from good to excellent. Some highlights were: Vienna concert, local classic trio (La Strada) and on-board entertainer on keyboard, Tamas. Meals on boat were uniformly good but wine only so-so. Free time was barely adequate, but that may have been our fault for not taking more. We found great restaurants in Prague on our own, and other interesting events when we had the chance. Met very nice people on board. I took 400 plus photos.

Africa… a Magical Journey

By Travelong | Our Blog

Africa… a Magical Journey Africa has become a popular destination for many of our travelers – with good reason! Here we share some accounts of their fabulous journeys. This will surely help others planning to experience the continent…. February 2015, travelers Diane and Ted shared a lively account of their African Adventure with our Ginger Morrissey: The gorilla trekking was absolutely over the top for each of us. That we could get so close and be completely ignored (I think that there were about 11 of us) was spectacular. Cameras were clicking. After our treks, and with lovely accommodations in each place we stayed, we’d arranged for a flight to Ethiopia, to visit the single mom of the student we are supporting through our local private university. Mekdi is now half-way through her junior year, all As, which makes us feel proud for her. I am completely well from the bout of stomach problems, and am waiting for my raised bruise on my right shin to heal after a mother gorilla and her baby came careening down the trail and bumped into me. We’d been warned by Cyn that the way back we would expect slip and slide, but it apparently hadn’t rained for a couple of weeks, so the ground was blessedly dry. No slipping! I wish we’d had time when in Rwanda to see the Memorial Museum as you had suggested. Not pleasant, but definitely part of its history. We did take two hikes up the mountain, and even Ted remarked on how difficult it had been–tiring, but accomplished. That was the easy part. The hard part was when I was standing to the right of the trail when out of the blue came a 350 lb. mother gorilla down the path, and there just wasn’t room for both of us, so her 350 lb. heft bashed into my right shin. The gorillas seemed so passive and secure, knowing that we humans wouldn’t do them any harm. Thank you SO much for making the trip possible. It was just perfect in every regard–even the hotels were spectacular. But the best part was actually being with the gorillas, who seemed to contentedly pretend that we weren’t even there! The babies were adorable! We were knocked over by the luxury of our hotel(s), and the organized drives to the gorilla areas were smooth and positive. It was sad to observe the obvious signs of poverty, but we have been all over Africa in the past, so it was no surprise…only sad. You outdid yourself in providing the best possible experience. Ben was a fabulous driver/guide, and our rooms were comfortable and luxurious. The organization to put all eleven of us in separate vehicles to get to the animals was handled without flaw, and best of all, our gorilla trekking was a “one-off” experience that was made permanent in our memory banks. We definitely had plenty of time to quietly observe the gorilla families in their encampments. Thanks for everything you did to make the trip so positive! The trip materialized beyond expectations. As neither of us had time to read to read Gabriella’s itinerary it was a sequence of delicious surprises. The first day’s “speedboat” ride with Chris to Jane Goodall’s Chimps was the first unforeseen thrill. The next day it was the little plane across the equator into the luscious south. The trek after Uganda’s gorillas was one of the most strenuous hikes I’ve had since my summers in the High Sierra, and WELL worth it. The animals were very real! That morning we met our exceptionally capable and sagacious driver/guide, Ben, who on the next excursion ushered us into Rwanda with illuminating dialog. Our second gorilla trek was fortunately somewhat easier, and just as rewarding, but felt the same back at the truck….. Rwanda was an eyeopener. Nearly as neat as Switzerland, thanks to a tidy dictator, and its infrastructure impressive, the population crunch, as with much of the undeveloped world, hinted at the roots of their genocide, so well dealt with in Kigali’s Memorial Museum. It was hard saying good bye to Ben. He was like traveling with your own professor/Indiana Jones. We regard this expedition amongst our most rewarding, and it’s all your fault! Many & most sincere thanks, Diane and Ted A special trip to South Africa, 2014: Recently, we returned to South Africa on a magical journey (they always are) and wanted to share some of the highlights. SA Airways took good care of us in their Business class section; no sleep but the movies and the service were up to expectation, with French Champagne and a marvelous South African wine. Upon arrival in Cape town, our Ellerman House driver whisked us off to our residence for two nights; unfortunately not more, as this property is everything their web-site says it is – Moet on arrival, cocktails before lunch and dinner and a view to die for. Cape Grace for two nights, elegant, on the waterfront and their car is available for local trips, as in Table Mountain, which was spectacular, as it always is. The Blue Train overnight was fun, the accommodations ample and the food ample, not great – the local wines made up for it. The Saxon Hotel driver met us and transported us to this modern, sophisticated establishment with large rooms and the best restaurant in the country, the 500. Their service is, as expected, impeccable. Onwards to Rattray’s at Mala Mala, wonderful accommodations and the animals always turn out to impress us. Our young, knowledgeable ranger took every precaution to ensure we weren’t the lion’s next meal and it is always amazing to experience wild animals up close. At Ulusaba, the Branson camp, we had an affable, loquacious ranger who regaled us with his many close encounters, mainly with elephants. Their chef, Jess, made every meal a special culinary delight and the view from the property is stunning. Back to the Saxon, then on to Botswana, Savute Elephant camp, where our ranger, Watch, took us wherever game had been spotted and we sighted a pair of lion cubs frolicking on top of a termite mound, determining who was going to retain possession of the fabulous viewpoint. Back to Johannes burg, two nights with relatives and then back home on the non-stop SAA flight. This time I took a sleeping pill and was rewarded with 8 hours – enough to be back at the office on the day of arrival at JFK. As the saying goes: You can never brush the dust of Africa off your shoes… So… I know you will return someday.

Simple Steps to Make Your Holiday Travels Easier

By Travelong | Our Blog

Simple Steps to Make Your Holiday Travels Easier Traveling during major holidays can be stressful and exasperating to say the least. However, there are several ways you can mitigate the worst of it and make the experience much easier – and maybe even have a trip where the ‘getting there and back’ portions become positively ordinary! First, when planning a trip that requires flying during notoriously busy travel times such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, consider flying on the day of the holiday, at off-peak times during the surrounding days, and/or from a secondary airport near your departure or arrival location. When possible, opt for non-stop flights so you’ll be less affected by delays. It’s best to book as far advance as possible for holiday travel, as flights will undoubtedly fill up and you want to be assured a seat on the flight(s) of your choice. Confirm your seat assignments when you book for the best possible seats. Be sure that your name on the travel documents matches your ID (license, passport, etc.). A little organizing before the trip can reduce stress at the airport. We recommend creating a master checklist based on your travel needs that you can simply pull out and customize for each trip. It may include “things to do”, such as get mail stopped, arrange for pet care, get vaccines, check passport, etc. and “things to bring”, such as medications, sunscreen, hiking shoes, camera, etc. This Traveler’s Checklist from the U.S. Department of State summarizes some of the more official travel needs, while the easy (and fun) Travels’ Checklist tool creates a customized list based on your travel plans. Before leaving for the airport, go ahead and check in online. If you provided an email address when the flight was booked, the airline will send you an automated message with very easy steps to follow to check in online. Even if you can’t print the boarding passes, this will still expedite your time checking in. In fact, you can go paperless for the entire process by having your boarding passes sent to your smartphone. In addition, you can download apps or check on the airline’s website to know the status of your flight. Once you arrive at the airport, be prepared to wait! This is no revelation to anyone who has flown in recent years, so the best thing to do is use the time to catch up on reading, watch videos, play games, etc. Bringing a few snacks may help! To get through security a little easier, we recommend you make sure carry-on liquids are packed according to regulations (see TSA 3-1-1 Liquids Rule), wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off, and wear socks to avoid walking barefoot through the security checkpoint. Planning ahead and being prepared can reduce holiday travel stress, making the time spent at your destination more enjoyable. If your holiday travel plans include choosing a vacation destination, contact Travelong of Summit to learn about the best places based on time of year, weather, special offers, and more.

Feedback from a honeymoon couple

By Travelong | Our Blog

Feedback from a honeymoon couple 1. Manna Bay Boutique hotel in Cape Town. Absolutely perfect!! 2. The tour guide Julie , the best!! Joan should keep her for her best clients. 3. Londolozi – where do I start. It was the most amazing experience! We delivered a postal for Rex from Manna Bay, learned about the family and friends. Our ranger, Jessie getting engaged to Duncan, going to visit the technology education center with Gogle Mo and Vida Basson was enlightening. The drives were spectacular, the tracker Chadrick and ranger Jessie were wonderful, so knowledgeable and very personable. The property was spectacular. The meals and service perfect. 4. Johannesburg, the Residence Hotel over the top!! Was just perfect all around.. Our guide for the tour was great. 5. Vic Falls Safari lodge was very nice. What we came from was somewhat different. Couple of clichés with the activities. . Dinner was extremely good. We did an elephant back ride at 6am before we got on our plane to start the journey home. Berry, it was an awesome trip thank Joan and Rex for us ..

By Travelong | Our Blog

Climactic and topographical variances in Argentina gives travelers the chance to plan a trip well-suited to their outdoor interests, weather preferences and schedules. Uruguay, bordering Argentina, is a hidden gem that wows with its combination of subtropical scenery, grand architecture, and the people’s devotion to soccer! According to Wikipedia, Uruguay ranks first in Latin America for democracy, peace, and quality of living. The vibrant capital city of Montevideo reflects the progressive modern lifestyle of its residents and offers wonderful plazas, viewpoints, wineries and sophisticated cultural activities to experience. A little closer to home is Costa Rica, increasingly popular amongst Americans for its natural beauty. You can visit a real jungle and beautiful beaches in the same trip, and mingle with native exotic wildlife! For outdoor enthusiasts of with any level of interest in being adventurous – from taking a leisurely stroll to zip-lining, a trip to Costa Rica means fun, relaxation, and great resorts! Special Experiences for All in South Africa

By Travelong | Our Blog

Special Experiences for All in South Africa I always feel so fortunate to be able to return to Africa again and again…though it’s usually for work, this past week was focused on pure immersion in South Africa with my family and some dear friends who were seeing this magical country for the first time. There were 3 children in total, ages 6, 7 and 13 and it was beautiful to see how overwhelmed they were with the incredible experiences that this country is filled with, and if you’re looking for ways to influence potential family clients on what there is to do and see in South Africa, I’ll share one of our most special days with you. While in Cape Town, I organized a Cape Malay Cooking Safari, one of the many experiential options that our destination management company features in their vast portfolio of immersions that twist up any trip. We began with a lovely lady named Zainie who took us spice shopping in the vibrant Bo-Kaap where brightly colored houses and smiling faces welcome you while you smell gorgeous aromas around nearly every corner. Untitled-1 Then, it was onto Zainie’s home and personal kitchen, where we all rolled up our sleeves and participated in everything from folding our own samosas, creating the perfect Cape Malay chicken curry, rolling dough to make our own roti and more, all the while hearing the beautiful stories of her culture, her history as a chef, and what daily life is like in this quarter. The children were incredibly engaged, mainly because they were encouraged to roll their sleeves up same as the adults and get involved in the cooking, and during the breaks, Zainie’s trampoline outside in her courtyard surrounded by plentiful trees to climb kept them happy. Untitled-2 When we all sat down to eat what we had prepared, it was equally as delicious as it was special, to have shared this experience with our families and children, and such an interesting person in the warmth of her home. There are so many wonderful ways to make your Southern Africa trip extra special! Thank you, Gabriella Ribeiro Truman, for sharing these wonderful vacation highlights and pictures! Why Bermuda is a Great Spring-Summer Vacation Spot

By Travelong | Our Blog

Why Bermuda is a Great Spring-Summer Vacation Spot It’s simple really, Bermuda has much to offer for a relaxing getaway and stunning scenery – it’s relatively quick and easy to get there from the east coast is and the fun starts as soon as you arrive. Since Bermuda sometimes gets overshadowed by other destinations, we’d like to share why it shines for us. First – the sunshine! And the temperature. While many other places can be uncomfortably hot and humid from April through September, Bermuda’s climate hovers in the 75-85 degree range, perfect for enjoying the ocean and many water activities. Bermuda is just right for travelers wanting an idyllic island experience in the spring or summer. After you’ve enjoyed swimming, jet-skiing, boating or other beach and pool play, there are plenty of sites to explore and soak up the culture of the island and its people – gardens, caves, historic houses, forts and the Royal Naval Dockyard, ecotourism, museums, and even a perfumery! Easy-to-use bus and ferry systems make getting around a breeze without the need for a rental car. Great food is icing on the cake for any vacation, and Bermuda boasts many wonderful dining experiences. The historic Waterlot Inn restaurant is one of our favorites for traditional steaks and chops plus bold new specialties. After dinner, enjoy music, theater, dancing, a beach party, or a cocktail at one of the island’s evening destinations. Bermuda – a complete and satisfying vacation experience! Want to learn more? Southeast Asia for a Fantastic Trip of a Lifetime!

By Travelong | Our Blog

Southeast Asia for a Fantastic Trip of a Lifetime! We enjoy sharing tips based on our travel experiences, but this time we’re thrilled to share a client’s perspective! Chris and his new wife honeymooned in the Far East. Enjoy highlights from their trip to beautiful Japan and Thailand. We had an amazing time!! Everything went smoothly, every hotel was perfect, and did an excellent job. Palace Hotel Tokyo – Best service we’ve ever had! Our room was on the highest floor with a breathtaking view of the palace gardens and city skyline. The location was perfect; all the popular attractions were no more than 20 mins away by cab (and most were more like 5-10 mins away). For our first night, the concierge sent us to a great authentic Japanese restaurant for dinner in the Shibuya district since we wanted to see the famous Shibuya crossing. We had a blast in Tokyo – I would recommend it as a layover for people traveling to Southeast Asia. The Peninsula Bangkok – Beautiful hotel. Kind of an old-world luxury feel to it. Service was outstanding. We loved staying on the river, and the hotel had these neat boats that transport you across the river for easy access to the city (boat ride took no more than 5 mins). We definitely recommend. Trails of Indochina did an excellent job putting together our itinerary. Suzie, our tour guide, was waiting for us right at the gate when we landed in Bangkok, and she and Chet, our driver, took us straight to the hotel to shower and change for the day (we arrived at 5am). We loved having our own private tour guide and driver, and Suzie was more than happy to take us to places not on our itinerary (such as Jim Thompson’s for souvenirs), which meant spending more time with us than the itinerary called for. She also took us to a “train market,” where lots of local vendors set up stands along train tracks, so when the train comes (three times a day!) they all have to quickly move their stands off the tracks, then move them back on when the train passes. This was a highlight of the trip and was not on our itinerary, so we really appreciated Suzie going the extra mile. We enjoyed the temple visits, and the floating market was a lot of fun. Suzie also bought us various street foods throughout the two days, which was a very nice touch. Anantara Koh Pha Ngnan – We absolutely loved our stay at Anantara. The beachfront villa was perfect, as we had our own private pool and were steps away from the beach, which was warm and much more beautiful than any of the beaches I saw at Koh Samui. The honeymoon setup in the room was very cool (“happy honeymoon” written in flowers on the bed, bottle of champagne, etc.). The island of Koh Pha Ngan is much quieter and less developed than Koh Samui, which means all the restaurants and bars (other than those at the resort) are true local spots. We loved this, but I can see how other less adventurous travelers might prefer more options. And if you can’t stand bug bites, I might recommend traveling elsewhere. The hotel coordinated our elephant trekking and zip lining excursions at very low prices and provided us with a private driver to take us to each excursion. Anantara was exactly what we were looking for. Novotel Airport Hotel – Perfect hotel if you need to stay close to the airport. It was much bigger and more luxurious than we were expecting. The shuttles ran very frequently and the service, like everywhere else, was excellent. Thanks, Chris – we’re glad this trip was everything you had hoped for and more! Best wishes always! Cities, Nature & Fun: An All-American Vacation Has it All!

By Travelong | Our Blog

Cities, Nature & Fun: An All-American Vacation Has it All! In honor of Memorial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day, we think of the many wonderful historical, patriotic, and unique places to visit right here in the United States! For an all-American vacation that combines using brain cells, burning calories, relaxing, and experiencing one-of-a-kind places, the following destinations make a great weekend getaway or full-fledged vacation that’s brimming with great stories! CITIES: Our cities offer remarkable architecture, with the stories of how our country evolved, and of course wonderful hotels in which to unwind at the end of each exhilarating day! With this type of vacation, even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, you’ll have plenty of great memories. Some of our favorite places include: Washington: Smithsonian museums with something for every age and interest; Arlington National Cemetery for a poignant and humbling experience; The Capitol and White House for a glimpse of government proceedings. Philadelphia: visit Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell to soak in the colonial times, play and learn at the Franklin Institute, and run like Rocky up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art then go inside it and explore! Much more here. Boston: take a walking tour along the Freedom Trail including a stop at Faneuil Hall, enjoy a baseball game at Fenway, or saunter around the Public Garden and taking a swan boat ride (a must do!). NATURE: Then there are the U.S. National Parks, each one with its own majestic beauty unlike any other place on earth! Thankfully, there are options for all levels of physical fitness so people of all ages and abilities can experience these marvels of nature. Five parks in Utah must been seen to be believed! Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Zion National Park give visitors the chance to see beauty up, down, and all around! And you can stay at a lodge right in the middle of the parks! The biggies: Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Canyon, and Yosemite National Park out west, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park east of the Mississippi, and many more. These parks never disappoint due to their sheer size and variety of topography. PLAYTIME: And, there are built for fun places such as Florida, California, and New Orleans! New Orleans holds a special place in the hearts of all who visit! It’s got great architecture, culture, events, music, food, and people! In the Orlando, FL, area, theme parks offer pure escapist fun for kids of all ages. Planning and following expert advice helps travelers get the most out of their time and money. Walt Disney World has four diverse theme parks plus plenty of other activities, while Universal Orlando offers visitors a walk through Harry Potter’s world along with thrill rides. Why the Berkshires Belong on Your Fall Getaway List!

By Travelong | Our Blog

Why the Berkshires Belong on Your Fall Getaway List! Every year, humans migrate to New England for leaf-peeping and old-fashioned fall fun! While Vermont and New Hampshire are widely known for their beauty, remember that western Massachusetts has a gem of its own – the Berskshire Mountains. Quaint towns like Lenox, Lee, Great Barrington, Pittsfield, and Stockbridge boast wonderful inns, dining (The Red Lion Inn is a treat), shopping, museums, gardens, wineries, and plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors for all activity levels! Just over the border of Connecticut and away from the traffic of I-95, this area never disappoints! To whet your appetite for staying at a historic mansion, one of our seasoned travelers shares this recap of her time the Blantyre Hotel: “My stay at Blantyre was perfect! The property is simply exquisite and the staff is professional, top notch, and quite warm and welcoming. There’s not one thing I would change about Blantyre! From the beautiful grounds, to the lovely interiors, the detailed touches and the attentive and charming staff……I can’t wait to return. I would recommend Blantyre to any couple who is looking to get away for a weekend of complete decompression. They will not only find relaxation, but they will feel as if they have stepped into a time that was classic and genteel! The grounds of Blantyre are pristine, with rolling lawns leading up to the venerable mansion that houses the main components of the property. The Cottages and the Carriage House sections also offer beautiful rooms, decorated in tapestry and furnishings of a bygone era. What caught my eye was the attention to detail at every corner! The rooms have wonderful coffee table books that you are actually drawn to read! The DVD selections are carefully chosen and embody the classic sense of the place. I watched “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” one evening. A delicious full breakfast (included) is served on china and features goodies from local orchards, bakeries, and farms. One afternoon, we sat in the stately main living room, enjoying the array of fresh fruit, teas and homemade lemonade. As we lounged, we were served by a polished “bartender” who pushed the beautiful antique barcart right up to us! We had the most memorable drink served in an antique highball glass. We felt like queens for the day! The Berkshires surrounds Blantyre. Lenox center is a mile away. Stockbridge and Great Barrington are 10 minutes away. There is so much to do that you will have to go a few times to enjoy it all. The arts are in abundance. There are hiking trails, biking trails, fishing and kayaking, all within a 30 minute drive. The staff at Blantyre will help you map out a day outdoors, or they will secure you tickets to a theater performance of your choice. You are treated as if you were a guest of the Astors!” Do yourself a favor by getting out of the rat race and escaping to the Berkshires for a few days of bliss!

Yes, Italy is Everything You Dreamed It Could Be!

By Travelong | Our Blog

Yes, Italy is Everything You Dreamed It Could Be! It’s always helpful to get feedback on a trip from travelers – in fact, we ask them to share any pros and cons! This recent traveler to Italy reported mostly positives with a few helpful hints to learn from: Many, many thanks for guiding us to a very special vacation! We had to really think about any negatives because they certainly weren’t obvious. But since you asked for pro and cons, we tried to give you something for future planning. Overall, though, the vacation was a 10 out of 10. Here are some random thoughts: Hotels Regina Hotel Baglioni was a beautiful hotel and a great location for our daily activities. They accommodated us with adjoining rooms on both visits, which was really critical. Otherwise, service was “good” – not too interested in catering to the kids. Santa Caterina was heaven on earth. The staff, accommodations, location, and views were “the best.” We were planning on taking a day trip to Capri on Saturday, but we loved the hotel so much that we stayed in Amalfi. We especially loved walking the mile to Amalfi center – it was a bit adventurous for us given the crazy driving all around us, but very special. From the center, we took a boat to Positano instead of a taxi – this was a great way to go on a very hot day. Trains Great call on the trains being late – we were prepared for the hour delay getting back from Naples to Rome. The first trip (Rome to Naples) was terrific in every way. A great way to travel for sure. Tours Absolute Italy: FABULOUS. Drivers were cheerful, professional, and informative – always on time and very good with the kids. We had the same guide at both the Vatican and Ancient Rome tours and he was spectacular. In every picture I have of him, he was bending or kneeling down talking to the children. Very knowledgeable, very dedicated, and very resourceful through any speed bumps. Our Pompeii guide was also very knowledgeable and did a very good job. We sent a note to Absolute Italy praising Claudio, Daniele and Peppino. Sites/Attractions A friend recommended we visit the Hotel Colonna, grab a Prosecco and take the elevator to the 6th floor roof for a spectacular view of Rome. We had the rooftop to ourselves and it was a great way to start the trip. We loved Vatican City and Ancient Rome – We could have spent more time there, but the time we allotted was perfect for the kids. These visits were extra-special because of our guide. Pompeii was at the end of the trip and the kids were a little ragged but they absolutely loved it. Hard for kids to get their heads around the history of the city, but it was something they will remember forever. We spent a lot of time in one particular house (9000 square foot palace), which was tremendous. Our guide spent time on the history of the Vesuvius eruption, which was terrific. Outside the tour package, the Pantheon was tremendous – the kids really got a lot out of that visit. We also loved spending a little time in Piazza Navona. We had a memorable time exploring Trastevere one night – a lot of action and great pictures! We saw Domus Romane, an uncovered palace found by archeologists during a subway excavation. It included a very cool light show and an amazing look at a largely intact house from 2000 years ago. Restaurants Santa Croce was AMAZING and a great start to our Amalfi trip – terrific views and great food. Perhaps the highlight of our trip was our time at La Tagliata – were welcomed into the owner’s “home” with a tour of his farm, we sang, danced, ate great food and drank wine all night! We stumbled upon Il Tari in Amalfi and had dinner there. When I asked what fish they had, the waiter grumbled, walked away from us and came back holding two newly-caught fish in his hands, asking me which one I wanted. We got over the fact that they weren’t interested at all in speaking English and had a fabulous meal there. Daniele recommended Il Pomodorino, walking distance from our hotel. We had such a great experience at lunch that we went back for our final dinner there. Big, bright, air-conditioned, and excellent food! We had a snafu with accessing cash one day (due to our bank), and before we could get it rectified, we arrived at one of the restaurants and realized they didn’t take the credit card I had available! Instead of turning us away, they welcomed us and told me I could settle up with them later. We had a great meal, lots of fun and the kids learned a valuable lesson about customer service and hospitality! Overall, we didn’t have a lot of down-time but never really felt rushed. Your planning for us was flawless! Thank you for making our trip so very special! Now, if you’re ready to discuss your dream trip to Italy (or anywhere else!), contact us. Top Ski Resorts for Winter Getaways

By Travelong | Our Blog

Top Ski Resorts for Winter Getaways A chill is in the air, snow is on the way, and soon the slopes (or lodges) will be calling your name! Escaping to a ski resort is the perfect way to enjoy the season while leaving the stresses of holidays, shoveling and icy commutes behind. If you’re a skier, you already understand the thrill of the world’s most popular winter sport. But if not, there are countless other winter activities (think sleigh rides, snowmobiling and tubing) and luxuries (spas, shopping, dining) waiting for you at the resort, along with eye-popping views. Whether you’re visiting with family, friends, significant other, or skiing solo, there’s fun for all at these premier U.S. resorts: Alta, Deer Valley and Park City in Utah Aspen and Breckenridge in Colorado Jackson Hole in Wyoming (top spot in Forbes list “The Top 10 Ski Resorts In North America For 2016” Stowe, Killington and more in Vermont With so many wonderful options, it might be difficult to choose! Not to worry, one of our expert consultants, Marylyn McLaughlin, happens to be a seasoned skier and long-time patron of many of these resorts. She shared her thoughts on one ski town in particular, Beaver Creek, Colorado. IMG_1732“I have been to and enjoyed many of the U.S. ski resorts with my husband and our four boys, but one resort has truly stood out to us above all others. Beaver Creek is a classic self-contained village equipped with a world-class ski mountain, 5 star resort hotels, an ice skating rink, high end resort shopping, art galleries, and an award winning performing arts center. It is not as big as some of the other top resort towns, but it proves that quality means so much more than quantity! The skiing on Beaver Creek is phenomenal for all levels of skiers. The more experienced and daring skiers (aka, my four sons) tackle the Birds of Prey, a lineup of double blacks that would challenge even the heartiest of risk takers. They are steep, deep, and bumped up. For those who prefer a calmer ride, there is plenty of terrain for cruising the blues, meandering the greens, and bopping in and out of the glades. All areas of the mountain are easily accessible with up-to-date, well-run. The trails are thrilling and offer beautiful vistas of the Vail valley. The food on this mountain is exceptional, and the service is just as impressive. After only two days at the hotel, the bartenders knew my husband’s “scotch”, my “wine”, and how many cherries to put into each of our kids’ customized “Roy Rogers”! There is a variety of exceptional places to eat, including Toscanini for Italian, The Blue Moose for pizza, the Coyote Cafe for Mexican, and The Dusty Boot for burgers and wonderful western ambience. Late in the afternoon, you will find scores of families gathered around the Hyatt’s large fire pit, roasting complimentary s’mores. We have never been disappointed by a stay at Beaver Creek, and I intend to keep up that streak when I venture back again and again and again…” Photos courtesy of Park Hyatt and Marylyn McLaughlin (pictured with her son after a day on the slopes).

The Weather’s Always Great in Anguilla!

By Travelong | Our Blog

The Weather’s Always Great in Anguilla! Let your mind wander to the Caribbean… sparkling aqua water, palm trees, relaxation… ahhhh… There’s no better escape from the winter blues! But which of the many beautiful islands should you visit? Our travel consultant Sissy Bolcar shares why Anguilla tops our list. She recently planned a trip for two families to visit the island for a holiday gathering of great friends and celebration of a 50th birthday. The families, teenagers included, were in need of an escape from the hectic metro NYC lifestyle. A stay at the Viceroy of Anguilla was the solution! A little background from Marylyn: I first visited Anguilla when I was expecting my first child in 1990. My husband and I stayed at the economical, now-defunct Mariners on Sandy Ground. We returned to Anguilla three more times over the next 15 years, as time allowed. We enjoyed stays at the Malliouhana and Cap Juluca hotels on subsequent trips. I’ve not been back for a few years, but have sent some clients, and my resort of choice today is the Viceroy. Why Anguilla? Part of the British West Indies, the island of Anguilla has retained its ease and sense of community. Although the landscape has changed in the last 25 years, the fabric of the citizens has not. You are quickly welcomed and set at ease by the warm and relaxed reception of your hosts. Anguilla is one of the few islands that allows you to rent a car and just get lost, exploring over 33 beaches in just a 16 mile island. It is not lush with forests and mountains, but the beaches are simply beautiful. They’ll compel you to sit for a while and maybe even take a nap! You come to Anguilla to relax, swim, sun, and enjoy the people around you. Visitors love the infamous Rum Punch cocktail, and eating grilled lobster and crayfish. Anguilla does not take itself too seriously, even amidst the continued development of upscale resorts and a new designer golf course. Anguilla still prides itself on it’s “Goat Crossing” signs, and its beach fish fry. Note – Anguilla is not the best island for golfing nor is it a place to hobnob with the rich and famous (although they do vacation there). Why the Viceroy? The Viceroy, a 5-star property that has earned its perch at the top of the Caribbean “A” list, keeps careful to blend itself into the feel of the island. The property sits on a peninsula between two beautiful beaches, Meads Bay and Barnes Bay. The design of the hotel is chic, yet natural. The common areas are open and combine the island’s colonial wood with organic fabrics. The feel is laid-back luxury, just like the island itself! Various dining options include the upscale Coba (where my clients enjoyed a holiday dinner), casual pool and beach-side grills, and the fabulous Sunset Lounge. My clients loved viewing the sunsets while sipping a cocktail and dancing to the DJ! They also took advantage of the in villa dining prepared and served by the Viceroy’s acclaimed kitchen. What is there to do at the Viceroy? Our travelers relaxed at the private pool at their villa, the main resort pool, and the beach! Paddleboarding, snorkeling, and swimming were the main activities. They even hit the fitness center and took a yoga class. The plan was to decompress, and that they did! More Anguilla Destinations Elsewhere on the island… We recommend dining at Anguilla’s classic restaurants Blanchards and The Barrel Stay, for a fun time and delicious treats. The Dune Preserve at beautiful Rendezvous Bay is an island institution and a must visit. Bankie Banx has assembled top up & coming island musicians to perform nightly at this rustic sprawling beach shack. It’s a priceless experience, especially if you get to hear Bankie perform! Our travelers also visited Scilly Cay, and as instructed, went to Island Harbour and waved for a boat. They spent an afternoon eating the amazing island BBQ, listening to reggae, and enjoying rum punches. Scilly Cay is pricey for lunch, but the grilled lobster is one of my most memorable meals, and the vibe is priceless. What Our Travelers Said “Hi Marylyn, Thank you so much for organizing my 50th birthday trip. Everything was AMAZING! We loved the Viceroy, the dinners you organized were yummy and the travel to and from was seamless! As you can imagine, we lit up the Viceroy a bit with our crew. We were the talk of the island with our Thursday night dance party in the Sunset Lounge with DJ Sugar. When we arrived at the ferry on Sunday we were told everyone heard about the party with people dancing on tables. Again, thank you so much. I had a smile on my face all week! We look forward to returning. ~ JoAnn and Jeff trio Final thoughts from Marylyn: When you get this type of feedback, it makes you realize the magic of trip design. The recipe? Listen to the client, select a fitting and extraordinary place (such as Anguilla), and match the property to their personality. It seems to have worked. I am currently planning my return to Anguilla as we speak. I will report back upon my return!

Tips for Planning a Vacation in Africa

By Travelong | Our Blog

Tips for Planning a Vacation in Africa Our Africa… A Fascinating Journey – Africa has become a popular destination for many of our travelers – with good reason! Our president Berry Versfeld, a native of South Africa with strong ties to his homeland, loves sharing the ins and outs of traveling to the continent. Here, some of our travelers tell us about their fabulous journeys. We think this will help others planning to visit Africa…. Gorilla Trekking and More on Safari in Africa african-gorillasTravelers Diane and Ted shared this lively account of their African Adventures: The gorilla trekking was absolutely over the top for each of us. That we could get so close and be completely ignored (I think that there were about 11 of us) was spectacular. Cameras were clicking…A mother gorilla and her baby came careening down the trail and bumped into me. We’d been warned by Cyn that the way back we would expect slip and slide, but it apparently hadn’t rained for a couple of weeks, so the ground was blessedly dry. No slipping! After our treks, and with lovely accommodations in each place we stayed, we’d arranged for a flight to Ethiopia, to visit the single mom of the student we are supporting through our local private university. Mekdi is now half-way through her junior year, all As, which makes us feel proud for her. Thank you SO much for making the trip possible. It was just perfect in every regard–even the hotels were spectacular. But the best part was actually being with the gorillas, who seemed to contentedly pretend that we weren’t even there! The babies were adorable! We regard this expedition amongst our most rewarding, and it’s all your fault! Many & most sincere thanks, Diane and Ted Beyond Safari – Luxury & Stunning Scenery in Africa Travelers recount their special trip to South Africa: Recently, we returned to South Africa on a magical journey (they always are) and wanted to share some of the highlights. Dramatic_views_1000_667_70_sCape Grace for two nights, elegant, on the waterfront and their car is available for local trips, as in Table Mountain, which was spectacular, as it always is. Soaking in the Local South African Culture Special experiences for all in South Africa, from Gabriella: I always feel so fortunate to be able to return to Africa again and again…though it’s usually for work, this past week was focused on pure immersion in South Africa with my family and some dear friends who were seeing this magical country for the first time. Some Testimonials from Travelong of Summit Clients There is one word our family has been using to describe our trip to South Africa, and that is “beyond”. They just keep talking and posting pictures on Facebook and Instagram of all they saw and experienced. Now we know why the company owners of our safari camps are called “&Beyond,” as I am sure you have heard from many clients. From our arrival in Cape Town and the excitement of our harbor hotel, the Table Bay (so perfectly set in that most beautiful of cities), to the restaurants arranged for us by the extraordinary and most helpful Joan Frost, of Redfoot Safaris, we were all delighted. Our guides and pickups were wonderful and the tours arranged, from beautiful drives, to penguins, to botanical gardens were terrific. Little did the family know what was coming on safari. I think they thought they would see lions and elephants way off in the distance through strong binoculars. The thrill of animals right next to your vehicle is truly one of life’s great moments, and the pictures taken by our family photographer, son Mark, prove it. You were so right to tell us to go to two different safari camps. There is a new experience to be had at each camp and both Kirkman’s and Ngala were great. We especially loved the water hole at Ngala so we could see families of elephants and smaller animals right there as we looked from the veranda. Superb. Kudos go to the young rangers we encountered at each place. They are so enthusiastic and intent on making sure you see what is out there in their world and they try hard to find the animals that we had not yet seen. One of our granddaughters fell in love again with each ranger she encountered. So funny. Terry, we know how hard you worked on this celebratory trip for our two life events and you should feel very satisfied on a job well done. More than well done. It was perfect in every way and we are grateful for the effort and blood, sweat and tears you put into all the planning and followup. We thank you for planning a true trip of a lifetime for all 17 of us. ~ Barbara & Charlie It was an awesome trip to South Africa and the Victoria Falls. Manna Bay Boutique hotel in Cape Town was absolutely perfect!! The tour guide Julie, the best!! Londolozi Game Reserve – Where do I start? It was the most amazing experience! The drives were spectacular, the tracker Chadrick and ranger Jessie were wonderful, so knowledgeable and most personable. The property is spectacular. The meals and service perfect. Johannesburg – The Residence Hotel – over the top!! Was just perfect all around.. Our guide for the tour was great. Victoria Falls Safari lodge was very nice. We did an elephant back ride at 6am before we got on our plane to start the journey home. Thanks for all you did for us. ~ Joan and Rex The gorilla trekking was absolutely over the top for each of us. That we could get so close and be completely ignored (I think that there were about 11 of us) was spectacular. Cameras were clicking. After our treks, and with lovely accommodations in each place we stayed, we’d arranged for a flight to Ethiopia, to visit the single mom of the student we are supporting through our local private university…. Thank you SO much for making the trip possible. It was just perfect in every regard–even the hotels were spectacular. But the best part was actually being with the gorillas, who seemed to contentedly pretend that we weren’t even there! The babies were adorable! ~ Diane and Ted Peter and I want to thank you for planning the most amazing trip we have ever had. Every thing was simply perfect. We meet some wonderful people along the way and the animal sightings are forever etched in our memories. While I knew we would see animals, nothing could have prepared me for the drama of those sightings. Tracking two lions who had been separated from their pride – watching them as they took down a bush back – and then seeing them reunited with their pride was nothing short of magical. Berry, I remember when we were planning this vacation and I told you I really wanted to do this right since this would probably be our only trip to Africa. You told me that once we got that African dirt into our feet we would be back. You were right! We are already thinking about where we’ll go in 2017. Again, thank you for something very special. ~ Laura Berry Versfeld organized a fabulous two week trip for nine of us to Cape Town, Victoria Falls and two safari camps in South Africa called Singita and Londolozi. The private guides, accommodations and food were all first class. Several friends had raved about South Africa but it truly exceeded our expectations. Highlights in Cape Town included wine tasting in Stellenbosch, the tram to Table Mountain, seeing the penguins on the beach and the tour of Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of the 27 years he was incarcerated. In Livingston Zambia we enjoyed a sunset cruise on the Zambezi river and then visited the spectacular Victoria Falls. A few plane rides later, we arrived at our first safari camp and were fortunate to see leopards and lions the first night. On subsequent drives, we witnessed a charging elephant, a baby rhino nursing from her mother, and lots of zebras, hippos, hyenas, kudu, wildebeest, cape buffalo, giraffe, crocodile and other wild life. If you are looking for a unique and unforgettable trip, contact Berry about planning an adventure for you. ~ Bob and Claudia Your Dream Trip Starts Here! Safety Tips for Travelers: What to Do if Disaster Strikes

By Travelong | Our Blog

Safety Tips for Travelers: What to Do if Disaster Strikes Our hearts go out to the people of Belgium and all those affected by the recent attacks. These are stark reminders of the importance of standing strong, carrying on, and embracing the people and beauty within our reach. We are still proponents of leisure travel for learning about and engaging with people of other cultures. But taking precautions must be a top priority. There are things you can do before and during a trip abroad, to take care of yourself and those traveling with you, and to keep your friends and family apprised of your whereabouts should a serious incident occur while you are traveling. Stay connected – meaning before you leave make sure your cell phone plan has the correct plan for you to use it abroad. Use social media – while you may usually stay quiet on social media while you are traveling, if a serious attack occurs in a location you’re visiting, there are tools for using Facebook to let your friends and family know your status. See Facebook Safety Check. Hashtags for events come about immediately, and by following these, you can get relevant updates. Review safety tips provided by experts, before your trip, so you can act quickly if needed. You can ask one of us or research online. Some helpful articles: What to Do If You’re Abroad During an Attack and Keeping Your Family Safe During a Terrorist Attack Register for updates and be aware of travel alerts. Some resources: Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and Alerts and Warnings from the State Department. Get travel insurance, and be sure it covers acts of terror and other violent acts. We recommend Travelex, an insurance company well-versed in protecting your travel investment. Be practical, but not alarmist – Is it safe to travel to Paris and other European cities? Sadly, there are times when tragedy befalls travelers despite the best planning and diligence. If no catastrophes occur – as is still the vast majority of trips – you can focus on enjoying the trip secure in the knowledge that you’re prepared.

The Girls’ Weekend Away Guide to Nashville (in Search of Hot Chicken and Cool Music…)

By Travelong | Our Blog

The Girls’ Weekend Away Guide to Nashville (in Search of Hot Chicken and Cool Music…) Our Marylyn McLaughlin recently organized a much-needed weekend with dear friends, and Nashville was just the right venue for this close knit group to kick up their heels. Their trip combined immersion in the Nashville lifestyle (drinking beer and listening to country music), sampling old and new culinary traditions of the town, and learning as much as they could about country music…..all in 4 days! Enjoy Marilyn’s recap of their laugh-filled girls’ getaway weekend: IMG_3327Landing in the heat of Nashville and convening at our beautiful digs, The Hermitage Hotel, we quickly plied our concierge with questions on the best boot store, where to get the true Nashville Hot Chicken, and what honky-tonks were not to be missed. The Hermitage is a genteel, old world hotel, where staff members greet you with Southern charm and a welcoming smile, and you’re enticed to sink into a comfortable chair in its welcoming lobby or to belly up to the Oak Bar for a classic bourbon cocktail. After dancing in your boots all night, you’ll find a wonderful treat waiting at your bedside, as well as much needed bottles of water. The beds were heavenly to fall into! What were the highlights of our trip, and what should you do with four days in Nashville? Make sure you see a show either at the Ryman Auditorium or The Grand Ole Opry: That first evening, we had tickets to the Ryman, which had housed the original Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974, during some of the most formative years of country music. We were going to be treated to some of the old and some of the new in the country world. The Gatlin Brothers were the guest hosts for Opry Country Classics. The show was inspirational, featuring Ashley Campbell, Glen’s daughter, Mo Pitney, The Gatlin Brothers, and Lee Greenwood of “God Bless the USA” fame. What struck me most was the pure delight in Larry Gatlin’s face as he watched and sang along to the guest artists’ performances. They were one big joyful family, and they were patriotic and faith filled. Visit as many honky-tonks on lower Broadway as you can! You don’t have to drink yourself silly, as there is no cover and no minimum drink requirement. Just pop in and enjoy the amazing talent that is present in each bar. Some of our favorite spots were Roberts Western World, Tootsies (rooftop is quite the party), Swinging Door, and Full Moon Cafe. Upon entering Roberts, immediately the mood overtook me. The amazing music coming from the band on the ramshackle stage was enveloping the crowd. We found a spot near the back and ordered a round of Chasers (the local brew) as well as some fried bologna sandwiches. I would not be caught eating this in NJ, but somehow the bologna, and the white bread drenched in butter was like a delicacy complimented by the ice cold beer! The talented artists, from young to not-so-young, had everyone singing along to their infectious performances. Visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and take the RCA Studio tour. This museum is not to be missed, even if you are not a country music fan. Walking along with an audio guide, you are treated to the history and “characters” of American Country Music, which spurs a walk down memory lane in your own life. Listening to the varied audio exhibits and viewing the displays, I was entranced at how intertwined country music has been in American culture. We spend two hours here, but I could have stayed longer. Highlights for me? The solid gold Elvis Cadillac and the Johnny Cash/Bob Dylan exhibit (who knew they were pals and collaborated often). The RCA tour is very interesting and gives you an opportunity to stand in the same space that Elvis, Patsy Cline, and host of other immortals stood while recording many classic songs. Don’t let the non-descript building fool you – it’s a powerful experience. Take the Pedal Tavern. The Pedal Tavern is a cross between a bike ride and a bar crawl down Broadway. You are seated around a bar that has built-in cup holders, with pedals below to power the “vehicle”. The vehicle is a surrey of sorts, with a lovely awning, the bar, and most importantly, two good looking young guys who serve as the brakeman and the bartender. It’s BYOB and the bartender pours your beverages along the way. You’ll be treated to an array of country music blaring at a deafening pitch and will surely find yourself singing along at the top of your lungs. I saw the Pedal Tavern on my first day and thought, how ridiculous!!! Well, upon taking our own journey the next day, I thought, how fun!!! We stopped at 3 honky-tonks for about 15 minutes each and enjoyed a PT drink special. It was a great way to enjoy Broadway and I’d do it again. Have some Nashville Hot Chicken – Go to Hattie B’s and plan accordingly. Hattie B’s is uptown, in “the gulch”. The hours are 11am-11pm and you WILL WAIT in line to enjoy this amazing Nashville delicacy. There are other chicken shacks in town, such as Prince’s and 400 degrees. Make sure you get to one of them and give it a try. Try out some of the newer, hipper culinary and cocktail spots. We went to Patterson House for cocktails one day. Patterson House opens at 5pm and my advice is to get there early. It builds a line quickly because this “decadent” cocktail experience has become a staple in the Nashville experience. The interior is intimate, with lots of velvet, low lighting, crystal chandeliers, and cozy curved banquettes surrounding an exquisite bar. The cocktail menu is one of the best I have ever seen and the cocktails did not disappoint! Try dinner at Adele’s (a Jonathan Waxman venue), Rolf & Daughters, or 5TH & Taylor, all newer on the scene and excellent culinary venues. Finally, get to Pinewood Social one day for some bowling and a cocktail. This is a kitschy spot that gives you a break from the honky-tonk circuit. Buy some boots! I bought mine at French’s which is located on 2nd and Broadway. They are service oriented and have a great inventory of western boots. You will find “booteries” all over town, so go in and enjoy the trying on experience. Then wear them out with shorts, a skirt, or some skinny jeans! There are a host of other things that I did not cover, such as biscuits at Loveless Cafe (which we did not get to), and having some comfort food in any of the honky-tonks. All-in-all, in Nashville, find yourself a relaxing hotel then just get out and play!

The best advisors spend a lot of time on the road themselves – scouting out hotels, deepening relationships with tour guides, and finding the best restaurants and things to do. Knows Your Travel Style A Virtuoso travel advisor understands what’s most important to you and your traveling companions. You may want to take a cooking class or a private tour, or you may not want to leave the resort pool! Perhaps you want to use travel to educate your kids, plan an unforgettable anniversary trip, or celebrate a milestone birthday with friends and family. Your Virtuoso travel advisor will have plenty of suggestions on what might work best for you. Expands Your Horizons A great travel advisor will help you think creatively about where to go and what to do. Italy, France, and Hawaii will always be popular. But your advisor also knows the best ways, say, to see Chile, Portugal, New Zealand, and many other hot destinations – plus new ways to experience the places you’ve already visited. Together, you can plan your next dream trip or weekend getaway. Can Handle Anything Have you ever been on a trip where everything went exactly as planned? Right – this almost never happens. Issues are bound to pop up, and your Virtuoso travel advisor is your personal help line and “fixer” who knows how to quickly turn things around for the better. When they follow up after your trip, you’ll surely have an answer to this question: “Where do you want to go next?”

Gifts Travelers Will Love

By Travelong | Our Blog

Our Terry Youngelson chimes in on how the gift of travel makes for a wonderful “experiential” present. We thank The New York Times for including Terry alongside other travel experts in this article. Excerpt from The New York Times: “Terry Youngelson, a travel consultant with the Travelong agency in Summit, N.J., says her clients give the gift of travel because the recipient’s enjoyment lasts longer than when receiving a physical present. “There’s the anticipation leading up to the trip, the experience itself, and then the memories of it,” Ms. Youngelson said. Giving books and maps related to the destination can add to the excitement.”

Italy! Florence, Tuscany, Positano & Rome Favorites

By Travelong | Our Blog

Italy! Florence, Tuscany, Positano & Rome Favorites No doubt, the allure of Italy is well-earned. With spectacular scenery, architecture, art, history, and food & wine – plus friendly people who inspire visitors to embrace “la dolce vita” – it’s no wonder Italy draws visitors from around the globe. One of our travelers, Justine, recently returned from a trip and we’re happy to share her highlights, observations and recommendations: Italy is one of the most fantastic places on the planet! I loved every minute of it and was very sad to say Ciao at the end! The people are so kind and friendly to Americans and tourists in general. The landscape is breathtaking whether you are in Florence, Tuscany, Rome or Positano. It’s a must-see country that you’ll miss when you leave! Florence – Art, Shopping, History…. And Food! Florence is beautiful with its quaint streets, museums, churches, wonderful leather goods, and restaurants. The iconic Ponte Vecchio was a great starting point and enjoyable for its shops, views and wealth of history. The expansive Uffizi Gallery can easily fill a day or more; planning ahead is key to seeing the works of Leonardo DaVinci, Botticelli and other masterpieces. The Hotel Minerva is in a great location near fantastic shopping, restaurants and sights. The stunning rooftop pool area gets busy on hot Italian afternoons, so we learned to arrive early to get a spot. The rooms are impeccably kept and beautifully modern. We frequented Restaurante Buca Mario, for the incredible steaks, Caprese Salad, and pasta dishes. It’s pricey but well worth it for the excellent quality meal and service. The private walking tour with Giovanni was a major highlight of the trip. He’s extremely knowledgeable and will happily recite the entire history of the Medici family, Ponte Vecchio, Florence’s most famous works of art. It was interesting to learn about the bankers and merchants who helped found Florence. Tuscany – Vineyards, Rolling Hills, Relaxed Pace… And Food! Abundant olive trees and wineries, vineyards set amongst beautiful landscapes and charming centuries-old towns make Tuscany a must-see for wine enthusiasts and anyone who loves the countryside. The mountains are breathtakingly beautiful as the sun rises on the valley. Definitely worth a few nights stay and the food, again, is incredible. Just poke around the area, relax and enjoy! Positano – Cliffs, Vistas, the Sea… And Food! Stunningly-beautiful, Positano is known for views of colorful houses built into the mountainside set against a backdrop of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. Spending time wandering around the island, relaxing at the beach, and just soaking in the atmosphere is an excellent way to spend time here! . For yet another special treat on a trip full of wonders, take a private boat to an alcove off the beaten path. The kind staff at the Hotel Posa Posa took good care of us, including arranging dining reservations and taxi rides. The patio view was incredible. Lovely to just have a coffee or a few drinks while admiring the incredible sun shining down on the pastel buildings or the bright lights illuminating the town. We very much enjoyed Chez Black in town; the pizza is out of this world, as is the pasta and seafood! Da Adolfo was another great find, so popular that it should be booked a few days in advance. Rome – Grandeur, the Roman Empire, Urbane… And Food! Rome has so many breathtaking sites, it’s hard to choose which stand out the most! Regardless of your religious beliefs, don’t miss The Vatican. It’s essential to book a tour in advance (ie, through Viator), otherwise be prepared to stand in line for up to 3 hours to visit the museum, Sistine Chapel and Basilica. All three sections of the tour are incredible and separately beautiful in their own right. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and explained the panels of the Sistine Chapel in advance so we could focus on the important elements during our limited time there. The Coliseum (aka Colosseum) and Trevi Fountain are also a must. The Coliseum is another place best visited via a pre-booked guided tour in order to avoid a long wait to enter. Plus, as you explore these ancient ruins you’ll hear the history of the Roman Gladiators, and no doubt be reminded of how good it is to live in present times! For some off-the-beaten-track activities, you can explore residential neighborhoods and see the beautiful brownstone buildings with French doors and patios. Of course, the shopping in Rome is exquisite and you can browse high-end stores like Gucci and Prada. There is also an abundance of leather shops, especially by Trevi fountain. The Marriott was very nice, with all the usual amenities, and close to many good restaurants and shops. As was the case throughout our trip, the staff members were extremely friendly and helpful. A truly memorable experience all in all. Italy, you are forever in my heart! Thank you Justine, we are thrilled your trip was so wonderful!
